What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Dealing with vestibular-related dizziness, vertigo, headaches, and other debilitating symptoms can not only be frustrating but also diminish your quality of life. But you have options when it comes to treatment, and our Atlanta physical therapy center is here to help! Are you curious about how vestibular rehabilitation works? Keep reading to learn more!

What is vestibular rehabilitation therapy?

The goal of vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is to reduce dizziness and vertigo through physical therapy training and exercises. Vestibular rehabilitation works to improve the connection between the brain, eyes, inner ear, muscles, and nerves, and the types of exercises can range from eye movement and focus training to balance and stabilization therapies. VRT not only takes place during your physical therapy appointment, but we also give you stretches and simple exercises to do at home for continued rehabilitation.

What conditions can VRT treat?

VRT can be beneficial for those with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or those recovering from a stroke, as well as improve fall risk in the elderly and chronic migraine headaches. Our specialized vestibular rehabilitation programs can be tailored to a variety of conditions, including:

  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

  • Ménière's Disease

  • And More!

Unsure if your balance or vertigo symptoms are vestibular-related? Get in touch with us, and we can help you uncover the cause of your symptoms and give you treatment options for the best path forward.

How long does a typical vestibular rehabilitation therapy program last?

There is no set timeline for VRT, as each patient is different and requires a personalized approach to treatment. Some people need at least 6 or 8 sessions to notice improvement in their symptoms. Others take fewer or additional sessions before seeing changes.
